After facing setbacks, the Sports Committee postpones the Spring Olympics

ST. CROIX – University of the Virgin Islands’ Student Activities Supervisor Hedda Finch-Simpson recently announced that this year’s Spring Olympics was pushed back to April 25.
Though the annual event was previously scheduled for March 21, the St.Croix Sports Committee had multiple issues that caused the event to be postponed.
“The main reason for the event being pushed back is due to a conflict in other university activities on both St.Croix and St.Thomas,” Finch-Simpson said.
However, events such as the physical challenge, volleyball, dance off, basketball, tennis, kickball, football, juggle off, dominoes, ping pong, swimming, beach soccer, billiards and dodge ball will still be played. Track and field was removed and replaced by dodge ball.
“The St.Thomas Sports Committee is yet to submit a finale sport that would be used as the tie breaker in the Olympics if both St.Croix and St.Thomas win seven games,” former Sports Committee President Gilbert Roberts said. “St.Thomas won’t have any teams ready unless they receive rules and guidelines of all sports.”
One former member of the St.Croix Sports Committee staff, wishing to remain anonymous, listed some of the committee’s problems.
“The committee as a whole had issues getting together for meetings, to conduct practices, briefing Hedda Finch on event progressions and communicating with St.Thomas,” the individual said.
When asked about the previous staff, Finch-Simpson said, “The contributions of the sports committee members who were tasked to plan the event, previously are cut from the project with the exception of one member.”
Finch added that since she has been the students activities advisor for the past seven years, the Olympics were never canceled and she didn’t plan on it happening now.
To help her plan the event, she formed a new staff comprised of two anonymous members but their names were withheld to prevent conflict with former committee members.
The two-man committee, along with Finch-Simpson were working on rules and regulations to send over to the St.Thomas campus so St. Thomas could begin selecting players for the expected events.
The committee also made arrangements to get sports supplies, T-shirts, referees, refreshments, transportation and hotel accommodations for St.Thomas athletes and host venues for the sports.
